<p>The 128th FS is the wing's flying unit and has operated the F-15A since the spring of 1986. The squadron was organized in May 1941 at Chandler Field, Atlanta and called to active duty between September 1941 and September 1945. The 128th Fighter Squadron received federal recognition in August 1946 while operating the P-47N. The unit took on the F-84D in 1950 and moved to Marietta AFB (later Dobbins AF) before being recalled to active duty in October 1950 until July 1952, and equipped with F-51Hs. The F-84D was assigned again in late 1952 before conversion to F-84F in 1955. The unit changed to a Fighter-Interceptor Squadron in 1960 with F-86L, although that role was short-lived as the C-97F was assigned in April 1961 when the 116th became an Air Transport Squadron. The C-97G replaced the F model before the C-124C was assigned and unit was redesignated 128th MAS in January 1966. In April 1973 the unit again changed to a Tactical Fighter Squadron, with the F-100D assigned. The 116th TFG was replaced by 116th TFW in December 1974. The F-105G was assigned in mid-1979 until 1983, when the unit converted to the F-4D. The unit is due to relocate to Robins AFB before converting to the B-1B, although financial constraints have delayed the plan.
